RUPERT CAVENDISH ANTIQUES

HARRY FREDERICK DARKING (born 1911)

'BOATS AT ABERSOCH'

Oil on canvas

A painter born in Nottingham, he attended Nottingham School of Art 1928-32. There he studied under Arthur Spooner and Joseph Else. He worked in advertising for many years as a designer, both before and after World War II.

Following active service in North Africa, he ran a small Army Art School in occupied Germany from 1945 to 1947. He later returned to his commercial art, all the time continuing to paint and exhibit locally with the Nottingham Group of Artists.

In 1994 he appeared on the Antiques Road Show with a collection of watercolour paintings of his war years. The quality of his work so surprised the resident art expert that it was later shown at the Army Museum and in Portsmouth.

Exhibitions: Royal Academy and at the New English Art Club.
