Robert SAWYERS, ARCA (1923 - 2002) 'Harehill Avenue in Leeds' Oil on board Signed R.S Painter, born in Peckham, South London. Sawyers attended Beckenham School of Art, 1940-42 and the Royal College of Art, 1942-45. He taught at various art establishments, including Leeds Art School, 1947-56 and until 1958 at Middlesborough College of Art. He won a travelling scholarship to Italy and France in the mid-1950's, and also spent three years teaching in Jamaica, first at Cornwall College, and then latterly for two years as the Principal of Jamaica School of Art, until 1962. Sawyers began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1947, and has also shown at the New English Art Club, London Group, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and Royal West of England Academy among others. He has held solo exhibitions at Middlesborough Art Gallery and in Jamaica. Examples of his work are in educational collections in London, Leeds, Manchester and in Brighton Art Gallery.
