WILLIAM WARE (b. 1915) 'SUMMER RAIN' Oil on board, signed From 1919 to 1931, William Ware was continuously hospitalised resulting from a childhood injury. In 1924, he began painting as a means of self-expression. He began schooling and art studies at Putney and Richmond Art Schools in 1932. He married the artist Eileen Aldridge in 1939. In 1940, the Imperial War Museum purchased his painting of the London Blitz; a number of others are held in their permanent collection. He established his own studio and gallery in 1946 in London. In 1955, he was appointed Art Advisor to The Greek Shipping Line and held solo exhibitions on the maiden voyage of TSS 'Olympia.' He painted murals on both the Olympia and Arcadia. Ware had a solo exhibition at his own studio on Chelsea in 1961, and then opened his own gallery at 160 Fulham Road in 1965, moving to 25 Sloane Street in 1970. He organised exhibitions of work by well-known artists, including a Camden Town Group mixed exhibition. He exhibited widely over the years including New English Art Club, the Royal Academy and the Royal Portrait Society. From 1986 to 1994, he had various exhibitions, including the Barbican Art Gallery, the John Hunt Galleries and, in 1994, his war paintings were shown at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and in Barcelona.
