(Click on photo for a larger image) JAN BOHUMIL POSPISIL (1898-1968) "THE STOCKHOLM TOWN HALL" Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1947 The monumental Stockholm Town Hall was designed by Ragnar Östberg and completed in 1923. Jan Bohumil Pospisil was born in Prague in 1898 and fled to Sweden from Czechoslovakia in 1946 when the Communists took over. He established his studio in Stockholm. He studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Prague in 1931-33 and at the Academy in Prague from 1933 to 38. He became a professor at the Academy during the war. He made study-trips to Italy in 1923, Dalmatia in Yugoslavia 1934 and 1939-41. His style is typical for the realism of the late 19th century and the traditional academic style. Pospisil painted portraits, still-lives, landscapes, town scenes and marine paintings. He is famous for his atmospheric views of Stockholm. Exhibitions: He held several 'One-Man' exhibitions: Prague 1938, 1941 and 1943, Ragusa, 1939, Zagreb 1940, Moravaskà Ostrava 1944 and also 'Group' exhibitions: Höganäs 1956, Karlstad 1957 and Ånge 1959 (all in Sweden).
