ARVID JOHANSSON (1862-1923) "SAILING BOAT AT SUNSET" Oil on canvas Arvid Johansson was born in Stockholm in 1862 and died in Paris 1923. After studying in Stockholm he continued his education in Düsseldorff and Paris where he settled and remained until his death. Johansson became a well know draughtsman especially of marine motifs. He worked for several French and English newspapers including Le Monde, Illustration, Le Journal and The Time. The French Government commissioned him to paint warships and Naval Regattas and was given the honorary title 'Peintre du Ministère de la Marine' in 1897. Many of his paintings were painted at French Naval bases and sea ports. Johansson exhibited frequently in France and Stockholm. He spent many summers on holiday travelling on the west coast of Sweden where this painting may have been painted. He received the Legion d'Honneur in 1899.
