Gard studied at Althin's School for Painters in Sweden, after which he made a study trip to Germany and France. He was greatly influenced by the artist and professor of the Swedish Academy Gottfried Kallstenius.

Gard painted mainly powerful and monumental landscapes with a preference for dark forests from the North of Sweden and Norway. He also painted motifs from the Stockholm Archipelago.
