EMPIRE CONSOLE

GILTWOOD, SWEDISH C. 1820

Attributed to: PEHR GUSTAF BYLANDER

Pehr Gustaf Bylander was a mirror and console maker, and he was active between 1810 and 1852 in Gothenburg. He was Sweden's most famous mirror maker during the Empire period. He supplied mirrors and consoles to many country houses and palaces in southern and western Sweden, including Skottorp, Sperlingsholm and Stjernsund. The Nordiska Museum in Stockholm, which is the principal museum of Swedish furniture, has several important mirrors and consoles by Bylander.

The book Neoclassicism in the North shows many examples of Bylander's mirrors and consoles, a particularly interesting console by Bylander which has some similar characteristics to this one is shown on pg. 176. At Sperlingsholm an overmantle mirror by Bylander is shown on page 163.

Bylanders Empire consoles and mirrors are noted for being magnificent and humorous at the same time.
