REGENCY EGYPTIAN REVIVAL MIRROR ENGLISH C. 1810 GILTWOOD Length: 59 ¾" (151 cm), Height: 49" (124 cm), Stock no: HG 7008 This mirror celebrates Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile at Aboukir in 1798. The crocodile is a leviathan, a large crocodile which is found on the Nile, which along with the Egyptian heads symbolise Egypt, whilst the lion is the symbol of Great Britain. Napoleon's campaign in Egypt led to a growing fascination with Egypt which led to Egyptian symbols becoming fashionable with both French Empire and English Regency furniture. Nelson's victory effectively cut off Napoleon's Army from receiving further military suplies from France and ended Napoleon's Egyptian campaign with the French Army surrending and Napoleon fleeing back to France. |
