PAIR OF BIEDERMEIER STYLE CABINETS

Russian c. 1913 - 1917

BIRCH

THIS PAIR OF BEDSIDE CABINET WAS MADE BY NORDISKA KOMPANIET AT THEIR WORKSHOP IN ST PETERSBURG AND IS SIGNED WITH A METAL PLATE ON THE BACK:

"NORDISKA KOMPANIET, ST PETERSBURG AND MOSCOW" (IN RUSSIAN)

The department store Nordiska Kompaniet (N. K.), which was founded 105 years ago in 1902 by Josef Sachs, was the most prestigious store and furniture maker in Sweden (the Swedish equivalent to Gillows) in the early 20th century. They had their workshop in the town of Norrköping, south of Stockholm.

They commissioned furniture designs from several of the most prominent architects of the day, and they had a considerable export business. They had outlets in such different parts of the world as St Petersburg and Buenos Aires. They exhibited at the Art and Industry Exhibition in St Petersburg in 1908. Because of their great success at the exhibition (one of their commissions was to make a dining table to seat 72 people) they opened up a workshop and store in St Petersburg later the same year (1908), a second store was opened in Moscow in 1913.

Furniture from N. K.'s Russian workshop is very rare, as both their stores and the workshop were closed at the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917. They also designed and made interiors and furniture for leading hotels like the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
